Orbis Skinny Harems

The Orbis is here! The Orbis is here!  The Orbis Skinny Harems, which were featured in One Thimble Issue 13, have finally made their way home to the Sofilantjes website. To help celebrate their return I am participating in the Orbis Skinny Harems Blog Tour.  Be sure to check out all the other stops:

Today is my day to show you my latest version of the Orbis. This pair was made for my oldest turkey, who seems to grow out of at least one pair of pants every week.  You may have read my previous post on the Orbis, but if you haven't heard of this awesome pattern, let me tell you a bit about it...

The Orbis is a unisex pattern that features two lengths, a dropped crotch, faux fly with buttons or snaps, a drawstring waist, and two over-sized pockets that connect in the back. It's a great pattern for sneaking in or combining funky prints.  They are super comfortable and easy, but still look incredibly cool!

They are designed for fabric with at least 30% stretch, so you could use a number of different types of fabric.  This pair is made from a fleece backed sweater knit from Joann Fabrics.  It's a nice medium to heavyweight fabric and super cozy.  I really like to make sturdier items for my fellas, since they are so rough on their clothes.

The fit on these is somewhere between a jogger and a legging.  The legs are pretty fitted from mid thigh down through the ankle, but the dropped crotch makes them super comfortable and look less "legging-ey," which is good, according to my boys. They are definitely the most comfortable, and most worn pants my boys have, as the previous pairs are completely worn out.

I love the pocket feature on the Orbis.  And the angled faux fly (below) is really cool.  Anne does the best job designing pieces with really unique and interesting details, and has become one of my favorite pattern designers.

Lets talk about the mods... I modified this pair of Orbis just a bit.  Truth is, I was making this pair to match a new Sofilantjes' pattern (coming tomorrow!!), and I ran out of fabric.  I had to do some interesting seaming on both front leg pieces and decided to add a little angled knee patch to cover the seam, all while complimenting an element from the new pattern.  The other little mod, was the addition of the squares behind the grommets.  I wanted to sneak in a bit more of the pocket print.  You may also notice that these appear to have no cuff at the ankle.  This is only an illusion... I made these a size longer than he needed, to give him a bit of growing room, the cuffs are just folded to the inside a bit, until his legs get longer.  As I stated above, this turkey seems to grow out of pants weekly!

The knee patches were really simple to add.  Here's a quick run through:  Before sewing the inseam and side seams... I cut an 8" tall strip of the grey (at an angle to match the grain line on the front legs).  I folded under each of the long edges under about 1/2" and pressed (you could use wonder tape here as well, handy stuff).  Then I pinned the strips to the front leg pieces, at a pleasing location that also covered my pieced leg seams) and topstitched them down.  The short edges were caught and finished be the serger when I seamed together the sides and inseam.  I love that the angle on the legs continues across both legs and mimics the lines in the new pattern.

The Orbis is just an overall great pattern.  The details make these so special an unique and Anne's clear and detailed instructions give you a perfectly professional product. (love alliteration) Make sure you head over to the Sofilantjes's shop and pick up your copy. The Orbis, as well as all Sofilantjes' patterns, is offered in both English and Dutch.
